Summer school : Remote sensing observations for the monitoring of water and carbon cycles over eco-agro-systems

Dates and location

The summer school will be held on-line from 21 to 25 June 2021.

Applications are now closed.

Objective

The systematic observation of the eco- and agro- systems is nowadays made possible by the increasing number of freely available earth observation dataset or products that provides key information for the monitoring of water resources and use, the snowpack, the crop growth and health, the land use … However, technical difficulties and knowledge gaps still limit the widespread use of the remote sensing data for the monitoring of land surface carbon and water cycles.

The school aims to provide the basic concepts and a practical background to students, researchers, postdoc and engineers from various disciplines interested in the use of remote sensing observations for the monitoring of eco- and agro-systems.

Description

The summer school is organized by CESBIO with the participation of LEGOS within the frame of several networking projects (CHAAMS, ACCWA, IDEWA, ALTOS …). The one-week summer school will provide the attendees a complete perspective from the signal physics of remote sensing data in different wavelengths to applications including soil moisture and land use mapping, evapotranspiration and drought monitoring, observation of the snowpack, deforestation. Some lecture will also be dedicated to methodological aspects such as practical images download and processing with a focus on Sentinel data, data assimilation into land surface models and land surface characteristics retrieval through AI methods.  Theoretical lectures will be complemented by hands-on training. There is no fee for the school but application (see below) is mandatory. Language is English.

Syllabus

Block 1: Signal physics

Block 2: Monitoring of the water cycle (soil moisture, snow cover, surface water)

Block 3: Remote sensing methods (practical data processing, data assimilation, inversion)

Block 4: Applications (land use, drought, vegetation water stress, deforestation)

A detailed program will be posted soon.

Organising Commitee

Lionel Jarlan, Simon Gascoin, Valérie Le Dantec, Vincent Rivalland, Dominique Tarrisse, Mehrez Zribi

Target audience

Graduate students (final-year MSc and PhD), postdocs, young researchers, engineers

Applications

A maximum of 25 participants will be selected for the hand-on training while the lectures are open to everyone.

Applicants are expected to provide their background in remote sensing, a motivation letter, their skills in programming and a CV. Deadline for application is May, 15 2021.
