Everything went well this morning, and SPOT5 is now on its new orbit, 2.5 km lower. Congratulations and many thanks to CNES operations teams ! The first images will be acquired next week. Stay tuned ! I had that question again : why does an altitude change by only 2 kms result in an orbit cycle change from 26 days to 5 days ? It is explained here.

Tracking the sediment plume of the 29 October 2026 GLOF in Bhutan

A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) occurred on 29 Oct in northern Bhutan, creating a debris flow in the Mo Chhu valley, Gasa district. The exact cause of the GLOF is still unclear but we know that it originates from Sintaphu Tsho, a moraine-dammed lake at an elevation of about 4500 m. This event has […]

Clear-sky Pléiades acquisition of the Rasuwa landslide source area

After many attempts, CNES’s Pléiades satellites finally captured a clear-sky view of the source area of the devastating flood in Nepal. The stereoscopic acquisition enables the generation of a high-resolution DEM and consequently a geometrically accurate orthorectified image. Although I’m not involved in the scientific analysis, I could not resist taking a closer look at […]
